Top snorkelling spots in Ibiza

underwater world

First and foremost, Ibiza is 210 kilometres of coastline. The island boasts many beautiful rocky coves and nooks that are ideally suited for snorkelling. Due to the high temperature of the seawater and favourable conditions, snorkelling has become a permanent feature of vacations on Ibiza. Beneath the water level we can see beautiful grassy meadows called Poseidonia oceanic, which are under strict protection, and multicoloured fauna inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea.

In order to go snorkelling, it is necessary to equip oneself with a snorkelling mask and a snorkel used for breathing underwater. Flippers or suitable water shoes can also be a great idea, especially if there are rocks and urchins underfoot. The excellent place to buy the complete equipment is the local chain of La Sirena stores.

Life is better on the beach

Cala Conta

Cala Conta is one of the top beaches in Ibiza, famous for its fabulous sunsets, red rocks and a spectacular view of Conejera island. Most of us are familiar with Cala Conta’s sandy beach, which is located at the foot of Sunset Ashram restaurant. It is worth going to the tiny nudist beach lying on the left side (looking towards the sea).

Thanks to truly crystal clear and azure water and the mixture of rocks and sand, there are plenty of underwater nooks and crannies to explore. Check out the long rocky cape and fishing huts on the left and a long stretch of the rocky coast on the right. And if you get tired, a refreshing Mojito or a cold beer in a nearby bar called Chiringuito will be waiting for you on the shore

Punta Galera

Here we will certainly not find a sandy coastline. Punta Galera is a place built from massive rock formations. The stone slabs form ledges, on which many people sunbathe naked. It is one of the more popular places for nudists on Ibiza, and also one of the more spectacular spots on the island. Here you will find many small underwater caves inhabited by colourful fish, octopuses and other creatures living in the Mediterranean Sea. Most of the bottom of the bay Punta Galera is overgrown with lusciously green seagrass – Poseidonia oceanica. This is another attraction for snorkeling enthusiasts.

You can get to Punta Galera by land, heading to the beach Cala Salada. If you follow the signs, you will definitely reach your destination. Remember to take some lunch and drinks with you.  You will not find any store or bar here. However, a lot more interesting option is to reach the bay by boat. One of the options is to hire a small boat without a license with your friends or your partner. The boats are often fitted with snorkelling equipment on board. You will sail to Punta Galera from the port of San Antonio, heading north.

Punta Galera is also a captivating setting, where you can go to watch the sunset. Then the rock formations are bathed in red and pink light. A perfect moment and a perfect scenery for taking pictures and capturing holiday memories. Read our post about “the best sunset spots on the island“.

Cala Xarraca

This time we move to the north of the island. It is not as tourist part of the island as its southern part, but is equally beautiful. Cala Xarraca is an attractive cove at the foot of a small red rock cliff. From the shore, you can admire small islets lying in front of the beach. On the right shore there are several houses, among which a cottage with a stone tower stands out.

The landscape is very appealing, and the surrounding coast offers many inviting nooks and crannies to explore while snorkelling. At the foot of the cliff there are several fishing huts with marinas for boats. You can sit here and relax during snorkelling. It is rather a family beach. It is most frequently visited by families staying in the nearby hotels.

The attraction of this place is a swing hanging over the water. Someone once hung a few ropes on the rock, which float above the surface of water, and now the swing is the destination of many visits. It is a popular place to take pictures. It has become fashionable, especially on Instagram, to post pictures from this place indeed. Besides, the rock on which the ropes are hanging, is perfectly suited to cliff jumping or jumping from rocks.

Snorkelling Boat Tours

Most of the boat trips offer snorkeling. What would be a boat trip like without a stopover to swim in warm, clean water and without the possibility of snorkeling. You can take your snorkeling equipment or use the snorkel masks available on board. The advantage of such a cruise is that you do not have to worry about searching for exciting snorkeling sites. While you will be sipping a cold beer from the all-inclusive bar, the crew will take you to your destination. Our TOP is a three-hour boat trip from the port of San Antonio, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy not only snorkelling, but also kayaking and paddleboarding at your stopover to swim. The offer also includes boat trips to observe the sunset. There will be plenty of time too for snorkelling during cruises to Formentera, both on a catamaran trip and on a cruise to three islands. Snorkelling off the shores of Formentera and the deserted island of Espalmador is quite an amazing thing!
