Formentera – a guide to the most beautiful beaches

Formentera beaches

Formentera is a small island where we can find many paradise places with crystal water and wide white beaches. Many of them are great places for snorkelling and water games, since the water in the sea here is pretty shallow. These beautiful beaches attract many tourists during the summer. In this article, we are going to describe to you both the most crowded and less known beaches. What is more, we will even tell you where to find almost people less places to relax.

Life is better on the beach

SES ILLETES BEACH

The Illetes beach is the most famous, most crowded, and considered the most beautiful. Once you reach Illetes beaches, you will understand why it was voted the best in Europe and ranked sixth among the top ten beaches in the world. Being on this beach you will feel like you have moved to one of the Caribbean islands.

Illetas Beach is located close to the port. You can get here by bike, bus, taxi, rented scooter, car or even on foot, but the last option might be a bit tiring while hot weather.

There are plenty of restaurants along the beach such as Juan and Andrea, Beso Beach, and El Pirata which offer great food, particularly fish dishes. Remember to book the table in advance since restaurants are very crowded during the season, and unfortunately, they are not cheap. There is no grocery store on the beach, no kiosks or bars that sell reasonably priced food or drinks. Therefore, it is better to stock up with the supermarkets in the port before we reach the beaches.

LEVANTE BEACH

The eastern part of the narrow peninsula where Playa Illetes is located on the long and wide sandy beach called Playa de Levante. Here we can find small coves and rocky areas. It is a place where you can find peace and privacy. The tranquillity and intimacy of Levante Beach make it a popular nudist spot.

Levante beach is mostly flat with gentle dunes. It is worth mentioning that it is often windy here and sometimes big waves can occur.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle this is the beach for you!. This is the place where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Ibiza.

ES PUJOLS BEACH

Formentera offers only one tourist resort, Es Pujol, with a beautiful, wide, and sandy beach, surrounded by dunes with small rocky islands near the coast with great views. Although Es Pujols beach is situated in a lively tourist destination, it still retains its charm. You can also find fishermen’s huts at each end. This is also a perfect beach for a family holiday and is also wheelchair accessible as it has an access ramp to the water.

There is a promenade along the beach with many bars, restaurants, and terraces where you can sit and enjoy a beautiful summer day.

If you are keen on active fun, you will find water sports centres where you can rent all kinds of equipment. The main street of Es Pujols, which leads directly to the beach, has shops and bars, as well as a small hippy market.

Migjorn Beach

On the southern coast of the island stretches a white sandy beach which is more than 5 km long. Migjorn Beach is very popular among tourists. There are not only many bars and beach clubs, such as the Pelayo Bar or the Gecko Club, but also many restaurants serving delicious food.

Here you will find a very hippie and cosmopolitan atmosphere that certainly will impress you. Clothing is optional on this beach, so don’t be surprised to see people without clothes, it is a super chilled spot.

The blue waters and rocky seabed make it an ideal place for diving.

ES ARENAL

At the southeastern end of Migjorn Beach is the white sand beach called Es Arenals. Here you can find a windsurfing and diving school, the first of its kind in the Balearic Islands. A great advantage of this place is the fact that you can rent sun loungers, umbrellas, and water bikes here.

CALA SAONA

Cala Saona is a picturesque little bay where you can look for and find peace. It is a place where you can enjoy fantastic views of Ibiza. What is more, its location to the west makes it the perfect place to contemplate one of Formentera’s magical sunsets. In addition to several beach restaurants offering good food, the Cala Saona hotel offers great views of this beach. Part of the beach has sunbeds and umbrellas, or you can just lie down on the soft white sand and sunbathe for free.
