Before mass tourism in Ibiza developed, the Island had been mainly inhabited by Hippies. Back in the 1960s. the island was an untamed place unknown to tourists. It was Hippies who came to Ibiza a few years later (the 70s.) and gave the Island colours and expressive character you can feel even.
Although the times of Flower Children are gone, in Ibiza the fashion for colourful costumes and the sense of freedom still exists. Moreover, fairs and hippie festivals are held regularly. Inaugurated in 1973, Punta Arabi is the oldest and the most famous Hippie Market Square in Es Canar (East Coast of the Island). Every Wednesday (from April to October) we can meet real hippies in this exceptional place.
More than 500 artists will offer us many of their most unusual hand-made works: handicraft, clothing, jewellery, natural cosmetics and other original items brought from different parts of the world. We can also have a henna tattoo done or buy our own caricature drawn in a few minutes by a local sketcher.
Even if we do not intend to buy anything, it’s worth coming here to experience an unforgettable time full of charm on this original flea market surrounded by artists, musicians or living statues. The atmosphere and the decor that prevails here will take us into the world from the era of Flower Children – we will see old radios that bring out well-known music as well as antique cars. There are also playgrounds for children and bars were we can taste the Mediterranean cuisine.
At the market you can find jewelry, clothes, accessories, natural cosmetics, herbal liqueurs and hand-made souvenirs. It is worth paying attention to the beautiful wares of moda ibizenca called moda “Adlib”. Moda “Adlib” is a typical dress style for the island of Ibiza, it is also known as ‘Ibicenco Style’. It is a combination of regional costumes and the traditional style of dressing on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera with hippy aesthetics. The main color is of course white. Clothes are made of natural materials and are characterized by flounces.
